Step 1: Download & Install

Start by visiting the official Exodus website (exodus.com). Never download the app from third-party stores or links. Exodus provides direct downloads for:

  • Desktop: Windows, Mac, and Linux.
  • Mobile: iOS (via the App Store) and Android (via Google Play or the website).
  • Browser (Beta): The Exodus Web3 Wallet Extension for Chrome, Brave, and other Chromium browsers.

For the best experience and backup simplicity, we recommend starting with the Desktop or Mobile app, as they allow you to create a new wallet from scratch. The browser extension is fantastic for interacting with Web3 apps (DApps) but is typically set up by connecting your existing wallet.

Step 2: Creating Your New Wallet

  1. Launch the Application: Open Exodus after installation.
  2. "Create New Wallet": Click this button. You'll be greeted with a celebratory animation—your first step into a larger world.
  3. The Most Important Step: Your Secret Recovery Phrase: Exodus will now generate your unique 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase. This is NOT a password. This is your wallet. Anyone with these 12 words in order can access and control all your assets, forever.
    • Write it Down: Use the provided pen and paper icon. Physically write these words on the included Exodus backup sheet or another durable, offline material.
    • Never Digitalize It: Do not save it in a text file, email, screenshot, or cloud note. Treat it like the key to a safety deposit box filled with gold.
    • Verify: Exodus will ask you to re-select the words in order to ensure you’ve recorded them correctly. Do not skip this.

Guard this phrase with your life. Exodus Support will NEVER ask for it.

Step 3: Exploring the Dashboard

Once set up, you’ll land on your Portfolio dashboard. Here’s a quick tour:

  • Portfolio Value: A real-time total of your holdings.
  • Asset List: View all supported cryptocurrencies. Exodus supports 300+ assets, from Bitcoin and Ethereum to Solana and newer altcoins.
  • Wallet Tabs: Easily switch between your Portfolio, the built-in Exodus Exchange (for swapping assets), and the Web3 Dashboard.

Step 4: Receiving Your First Crypto

To fund your wallet:

  1. Click "Receive" on the Portfolio tab.
  2. Select the asset (e.g., Bitcoin, ETH, SOL).
  3. You’ll see your unique public address (a long string) and a QR code. This is safe to share—it’s like your public bank account number for receiving funds.
  4. Share this address with the sender or from your exchange account. Always double-check the first and last few characters.

Step 5: The Web3 & DApp Experience

This is where the "Web3" in Exodus Web3 Wallet shines.

  • On Mobile/Desktop: Use the in-app browser to visit DApp websites directly. Connect your wallet with a click to trade on decentralized exchanges (DEXs), mint NFTs, or play blockchain games.
  • With the Browser Extension: Install it and connect it to your main Exodus wallet (using your Secret Phrase or a secure sync). Now, any compatible DApp (like Uniswap, OpenSea, or Magic Eden) will recognize your Exodus wallet. You can approve transactions seamlessly, with fees and data displayed clearly before you sign.

Security First: Best Practices

  1. Backup, Backup, Backup: That 12-word phrase is your only backup. Store multiple physical copies in safe, separate locations.
  2. Use a Strong Password: While the phrase restores everything, a strong app password adds a crucial daily-use layer of security.
  3. Enable Automatic Updates: Always run the latest version of Exodus for new features and critical security patches.
  4. Verify Transactions: Always check the recipient address and network fees before confirming. Exodus shows you exactly what you're signing.
  5. Beware of Phishing: Never enter your phrase on any website. Official DApps will only ask you to "Connect Wallet," not for your secret words.
